SDAHO Applauds Philip Health Services on Ribbon Cutting of Scotchman Living Center

Congratulations to Philip Health Services for their open house and ribbon cutting for the expansion of the Scotchman Living Center. On December 8, 2022, members of Philip and surrounding communities joined staff from Philip Health Services, the US Department of Agriculture alongside local and state leaders for this special event that will expand senior care, a project that began in 2017. It was recognized that expansion and renovation of the nursing home was needed, when many of the residents in need of senior care were being relocated to different parts of the state due to limited capacity. At that time, attempts were made to treat those in need of senior care at the hospital, but it was determined the type of required care, needed to take place in a nursing facility. Today SDAHO recognizes the hard work and fundraising efforts of the Philip Community and Philip Health Services as they’ve raised $2.9 million dollars to build the Scotchman Living Center. In addition, the US Department of Agriculture Rural Development Office in South Dakota contributed nearly $6 million dollars to the project for this much needed facility.

The Scotchman Living Center is a 42-bed facility with large handicapped accessible bathing rooms in both wings, for assisted bath needs. It consists of 14 beds in Memory Care, which includes the following:

  • 4 private rooms
  • 5 semi-private rooms with 2 beds each

There are an additional 28 resident beds:

  • 10 private rooms
  •  9 semi-private rooms with 2 beds each.  Each room contains an ensuite bathroom.

Residents will have more options for gatherings, events, dining and relaxing. Both wings have separate areas for dining and lounging, including fireplaces. There is a chapel/activities room, a conference and training room, education center and large therapy gym. The gym also contains an occupational therapy kitchen/bathroom, which allow therapists to train patients to utilize those areas in their own home after recovering from an illness or injury.

With this latest addition, Philip Health Services hopes more residents can stay closer to home, with their family and friends during their nursing home stay.

The new facility is a source of pride for the community of Philip, because of the tremendous success of the capital campaign that raised close to $3 million dollars. Much of the expansion and remodel took place during a pandemic, a very difficult task for such a rural setting. The Scotchmen Living Center will have a positive impact on the health of area residents for years to come. Congratulations to Philip Health Services.
