Understanding the 2023 Changes to Hospice and Palliative Care Billing

Over the past three years, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have worked to simplify and streamline medical billing for providers. More emphasis is now placed on time and medical decision making and less on documentation requirements. These billing changes go into effect January 1, 2023.

During a recent National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) regulatory office hours, the American Medical Association (AMA) CPTĀ® Evaluation and Management (E/M) Code and Guideline Changes document was provided. They strongly urged providers and billers to read through this document to better understand the updated billing changes.

Another resource is the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) website. Members of CAPC have full access to the revised toolkit on billing along with a webinar that Drs. Chris Jones and Phil Rogers will have February 7, 2023. If you have not seen their past sessions on billing, they do a great job of explaining how to get the most out of your time and complexity. For those who do not have a CAPC membership, they do have some public access information available on their website. Remember, if youā€™ve ever considered getting a CAPC membership, SDAHO members receive a 15% discount for the first year of membership!

Here is the link to the Billing Toolkit which will have open access and member-only resources.
