April is National Donate Life Month: Learn More About Becoming a Donor Today

SDAHO is excited to celebrate National Donate Life Month! Every April we celebrate National Donate Life Month to honor those that have saved lives with the gift of donation. The hope is that through education, conversation, and other activities we can inspire and encourage more people to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

Join SDAHO and members of the LifeSource organization on Wed. April 5, 2023 from 10am CT to 11am CT, for the webinar: How You Help Save Lives; Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation.

Members of the LifeSource Team will discuss the healthcare professional’s role in the donation process. The session will identify what organs and tissues (including eyes) can be donated and their uses in transplantation. By the end participants will be able to summarize the referral process for potential organ, tissue, and eye donors, including how to complete required documentation. LifeSource is one of 56 Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) in the country, serving the second largest geographical region, focusing on Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and portions of western Wisconsin. Those serving LifeSource are on the front lines of organ donation. They are passionate and committed first responders who specialize in the process of organ donation, see transplants reach waiting recipients, support donor families, and inspire people in communities across the upper Midwest to register as donors.

Donate Life Month Dates to Remember:

April 5 is Living Donor Day. This day is a celebration that honors living organ and tissue donors for saving and healing lives! Living donation takes place when a living person donates an organ (or part of an organ) for transplantation to another person. The living donor can be a family member, a friend or a stranger.

To help support National Donate Month – don’t forget to mark your calendars for National Blue and Green Day. On April 14 the public is encouraged to wear blue and green and to engage in the Donate Life message and promoting the importance of registers as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

National Pediatric Transplant Week (April 23-29, 2023)takes place the last full week of National Donate Life Month in April. It focuses on the powerful message of ending the pediatric transplant waiting list. Throughout Pediatric Transplant Week, clinical partners share patient stories (candidates and recipients); donor families whose children have saved and healed lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation are honored; and recipient families share their thanks and milestone celebrations.
