SDAHO’s Quality Integration Department Host MBQIP Quality Measures Workshop

The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) Quality Integration Department recently co-hosted the 2023 MBQIP Quality Measures Workshop, April 19, 2023, at the Sioux Falls Hilton Garden Inn South.
Quality meets data and measures simplified was the theme of this year’s conference. In addition to regular attendees,  through the Flex grant, South Dakota critical access hospitals were able to have (1) employee registration fee, lodging and miles reimbursed for this year’s event. The project is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as part of an awarding totaling $136,374.00.

Attendees were able to meet the SD Flex Coordinator, Michelle Hoffman, who is the Rural Hospital Program Coordinator through the SD Office of Rural Health. Becky Heisinger, Director of Quality Integration with SDAHO is excited about this year’s turnout. “ The MBQIP Workshop was an excellent opportunity for attendees to grow and strengthen their knowledge of the MBQIP measures and to connect with other quality professionals from around the state.” Becky Heisinger, Dir. Of Quality Integration, SDAHO

Michelle Hofer is one of two Clinical Improvement Consultant with SDAHO. Hofer presented on HARP (HCQIS Access Roles and Profile), which is one of the keys that hospital staff need to accurately submit their data for the MBQIP program. “When submitted, this data has resulted in funding to facilities which has been used for activities such as trauma webinar series, emergency nurse pediatric course, access to antibiotic stewardship education, revenue cycle trainings and billing and coding education. There are details within HARP that are very important for all submitting staff to be aware of, and we walked step-by-step through the details so attendees could be sure they were submitting their data correctly.” Michelle Hofer, BSN, RN, CPHQ, Clinical Improvement Consultant, SDAHO

In addition, Loretta Bryan, a Clinical Improvement Consultant with SDAHO also presented at the workshop.  Her presentation was on CART (CMS Abstraction and Reporting Tool).  This software application is for the collection and analysis of quality improvement data. She was very excited about the opportunity this year’s event provided to CAH’s and the future. “The staff from our critical access hospitals across the state came to learn more about the MBQIP program and how to collect and report their data.  We had excellent engagement from the participants and had some very open and engaging conversations around the MBQIP measures.  I felt this conference allowed for fun learning but also gave the hospital staff time to network with others across the state of South Dakota.  We are looking forward to many great conferences in the future.” Loretta Bryan, BSN, RN, CPHQ, Clinical Improvement Consultant, SDAHO

This year’s workshop hosted 29 CAH’s from across South Dakota, with two additional speakers sharing information for attendees.

  • Robyn Carlson, RHIA, CPHQ – Quality Reporting Specialist, Stratis Health
  • Lindsey Karlson, Director of Programs and Training, with the Community Healthcare Association of the Dakotas (CHAD)

Hofer, says this years workshop was a smashing success. “ We had attendees from all across the state and from all levels of experience gathering in-person, together, to network and share ideas.  We coupled the boots on the ground experience from quality staff with experts in the field in Robyn, Michelle Hoffman, and Lindsey, and you just cannot get a better combination for a successful event.  The participation from attendees was great and there were comments throughout the day and after the event which sounded like everyone had learned something new.  It was a very successful day!” Michelle Hofer, BSN, RN, CPHQ, Clinical Improvement Consultant, SDAHO
