Board Governance Training Micro-Videos: Don’t Fake It and A Story from Margaret Sumption

Earlier this year the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) launched Stepping into Governance, a 4-part video series focusing on board governance training. This month, SDAHO pushed out the first set of micro-learning videos from this series, which will give members bite size lessons.

This week we are sharing clips from Session 2: Partnerships and Alliances. This video provides an overview of the many relationships that contribute to effectively running a healthcare organization. Outlined are the relationships, partnerships, understanding, and communication demanded of board members as they provide their leadership to their organizations. Board members have a fiduciary duty to understand types of affiliations and partnerships now common in healthcare across regions. Board members are the voice of their community and each member’s voice has power.

In this first video, Margaret explains her rule of thumb which is “make rules when you are happy so that you can implement them when you are not happy.” Viewers will get a better understanding of why it’s important to create a rule book at a time when everyone on a board is working well together, so when there are hard decisions to be made and board members find themselves in a difficult state, the rule book can be referenced.

Through the Board Governance Video Training series, Margaret often shares anecdotes, real life stories and scenarios to help viewers better understand how board practices and policies have been or could be used. In this story Margaret shares the frustration one board chair was having due to the lack of preparation coming from other members on the board, and that chairs solution.
