SD hospital selected to participate in Transforming Episode Accountability Model (TEAM)

On September 5, 2024, CMS announced a list of acute care hospitals selected for mandatory participation in the Transforming Episode Accountability Model (TEAM), including Monument Health Spearfish from South Dakota. TEAM, starting January 1, 2026, will run for five years and build on previous episode-based payment models like Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced and Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement.

This mandatory model will require selected hospitals to manage the cost and quality of care for Medicare patients undergoing specific surgeries for 30 days post-discharge. The model includes lower extremity joint replacement, hip femur fracture treatment, spinal fusion, coronary artery bypass graft, and major bowel procedures. Participants will be given a target price covering the entire episode of care and are encouraged to improve care coordination and reduce readmissions. Additionally, TEAM features a voluntary Decarbonization and Resilience Initiative to address climate change impacts on healthcare.
