On Sunday November 3, 2024, The South Dakota Department of Health shared updated guidance for healthcare providers on pertussis testing and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) to help protect patients and our communities.
Pertussis Testing Guidelines
- When to Test: For optimal accuracy, test only symptomatic patients within the first 3 weeks of cough. Testing beyond this period can lead to false negatives, especially after 4 weeks or after 5 days of antibiotic use.
- Who to Test: Testing is reserved for patients with signs and symptoms of pertussis. Please avoid testing asymptomatic patients or contacts for determining PEP needs.
PEP Priority
- Household Contacts: All household members of a pertussis case should receive PEP.
- High-Risk Individuals: Prioritize PEP within 21 days of exposure for high-risk individuals, such as infants, pregnant women in the third trimester, and those with pre-existing conditions (e.g., immunocompromised, moderate to severe asthma).
These guidelines are designed to ensure effective testing and protection measures, minimizing the spread of pertussis within South Dakota.
