The South Dakota Department of Health adopted proposed rules and put them into effect November 11, 2024 “to maintain the health and safety of residents and patients receiving services in nursing homes, birth centers, assisted living centers, hospitals, specialized hospital, critical access hospital and rural emergency hospitals.”
One such updated rule is 44:73:04:05 Personnel Training which requires nursing facilities to “have a formal orientation program and an ongoing education program for all health care personnel. All health care personnel must complete the orientation program within thirty days of hire and the ongoing education program annually thereafter.”
New to the list of subjects that must be included is Advanced Directives (personnel whom the facility determines will have no contact with residents are exempt from this). To help facilities easily provide this training, LifeCircle SD members, Dr. Priscilla Bade, geriatrician with Monument Health Rapid City, and Melissa Schilousky, MSN, FNP-C, CNP, nurse practitioner with Avera Medical Group Palliative Medicine in Yankton, along with South Dakota Healthcare Organization’s (SDAHO) Hospice and Palliative Care Program Manager Michele Snyders, CSW-PIP, APHSW-C created a video that can be used to provide Advance Directive education to facility staff.
The video, produced by SDAHO’s Marketing and Media Relations Manager Stephanie Rissler, is 13 minutes long. The objectives are
- Define advance care planning
- Define Advance Directives
- Review the elements of Advance Directives
- Describe the types of Advance Directives available in South Dakota.
Also included is a pre/post-test with an answer key if needed. Links can be found in the flier, which can be accessed by clicking here: Advanced Directives – Video Training Flier.
Please be sure to share with your education department and/or educators to see if this video would meet your needs and could be added to your orientation and annual staff training.
