Flags at Half-Staff at State Capitol in Honor of Mike Diedrich

Governor Larry Rhoden ordered that flags be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in honor of former state legislator Michael (Mike) Diedrich. He served in the South Dakota State Senate from 1987 to 1990, from 1993 to 1994, and from 2021 to 2024. He also served in the South Dakota State House of Representatives from 2018 to 2020.

“Mike was a ray of positivity in the legislature, and he was my friend. He always focused on the opportunities in front of us,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “He was a strong advocate for his own community, but he balanced that with being a problem solver for the entire state. We will miss him, and we are praying for his family.”

Monument Health also posted on their Facebook page: We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Diedrich, a beloved colleague and community champion who retired from Monument Health in 2024.

Mike’s legacy spans decades of service—from his roles as Vice President of Governmental Affairs at Monument Health to his work as a South Dakota State Senator. He was a true change maker who dedicated his life to improving health care, protecting vulnerable populations, and strengthening our community.

His humility, wisdom and unwavering commitment to Rapid City touched countless lives. Mike didn’t just talk about making a difference, he lived it every day with charisma, tenacity, and heart.

After his time serving as a state lawmaker was complete, Mike provided valuable policy advice during legislative advocacy efforts at the South Dakota Legislative Session on behalf of SDAHO and its members. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. The positive impact he had on his community and the healthcare industry will be felt for generations to come.
