100 Years Young: Finding Freedom, Purpose, and Joy – Meet Janet Lyso

The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) is thrilled to share another, “100 Years Young” — a heartwarming video story that celebrates the incredible life of a South Dakota centenarian and the compassionate caregivers who support her.

Meet Janet Lyso – A Spirit of Strength and Independence

Janet Lyso, a resident of Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls, turned 100 in December 2024. Those who know Janet describe her as “incredibly independent,” says Vonnie Nour, Social Worker at Dow Rummel Village. Donna Worth, Certified Medication Aide, calls her “feisty and funny.”

When asked to describe herself, Janet doesn’t hesitate:

“I’m not afraid to speak up. My brain works and my mouth works!”

A Journey of Resilience

Born in Pennsylvania, Janet’s early life was shaped by the Great Depression. Her family moved to Savannah, Georgia, where times were difficult. Janet’s grandparents in Georgia were Russian Orthodox Jewish immigrants, Janet recalls the challenges of carrying a Jewish surname in the segregated South.

After graduating from Savannah High School in 1942, she completed business training and began working for the Quartermaster Corps at an Army Depot west of Savannah. There, she met Mel Lyso, a military man from rural South Dakota who would later become her husband.

Following World War II, the couple moved to South Dakota, where Mel pursued a pre-med education and eventually became a doctor serving the Yankton community. Together, they raised four children, two biological and two adopted. Once her children were grown, Janet found a new passion in civic engagement through the League of Women Voters and the Yankton Chamber of Commerce Education Committee.

“Women had to do tough things in order to get where we are today,” said Vonnie Nour. “I can only imagine Janet being one of those strong-willed women who helped pave the way for what I’m able to do now.”

A Life Well-Lived at Dow Rummel Village

After her husband’s passing, Janet chose to move to Dow Rummel Village—a decision that has helped her maintain her independence and quality of life. “I didn’t want to take care of a house anymore,” she says. “I’ve had great care here. Everyone in caregiving is good. I’m glad I can pick and choose how I want to live.”

Vonnie adds, “You have to know your residents—their likes, dislikes, backgrounds, and culture. Listening to their journeys gives us wisdom. I feel blessed to care for residents like Janet.”

Wisdom at 100

Over the past century, Janet has seen the world transform—from typewriters to computers and rotary phones to smartphones. She embraces technology to stay connected with family but still takes time to rest, laugh, and reflect.

“At this age, I take naps!” she jokes. “I know I must be content because God is working through me. I’m ready to go—except I have my foot stuck in the doorframe because I still have things to do for God!”

Why It Matters

Each 100 Years Young story celebrates more than age—it highlights the importance of compassionate care, preventive health, and living with purpose. Janet’s journey is a testament to strength, adaptability, and the joy that comes from a life well lived.
