AHA responds to OSTP request on AI policies for health care

The American Hospital Association (AHA) provided comments to the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) request for information regarding regulatory reform on artificial intelligence (AI).

In a letter submitted October 27, the AHA applauded the administration’s “recognition that overly restrictive regulations can increase costs, stifle innovation and hamper competition.” It went on to point out the unnecessary costs and reduced patient access to care that was caused by excessive regulatory and administrative burdens. AHA welcomed the opportunity to provide comments on “ways to reduce regulatory burden for the development and deployment of AI tools within health care.”

In the letter AHA noted that AI tools can “transform care delivery and address some administrative burdens that increase costs.” AI is already used in several ways in health care, “from ambient listening technologies assisting with clinical documentation, to chatbots helping with scheduling and triaging, to algorithms supporting clinician interpretation of images, AI-based tools have already made a significant positive impact on providers and patients across the country.”

AHA provided four categories of recommendations where AI can be used to support health care. Each category is broken down further and notes challenges and insights on AIs potential role in health care.

  1. Synchronize and leverage existing policy frameworks to avoid redundancy
  2. Remove regulatory barriers
  3. Ensure the safe and effective use of AI
  4. Address organizational and infrastructural factors
