Celebrating South Dakota’s Centenarians – One Story at a Time

The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) earlier this year, shared its 100 Years Young video series — a heartwarming celebration of South Dakota’s centenarians and the caregivers who help them live full, meaningful lives.

Ruth Schmidt and her daughter Susan

SDAHO highlighted Ruth Schmidt of Dow Rummel Village, whose adventurous spirit and zest for life remind us that curiosity and movement truly keep us young. To view Ruth’s story, click here.

Janet Lyso

After Ruth, SDAHO met Janet Lyso, another Dow Rummel resident known for her strength, independence, and humor — a woman who’s “not afraid to speak up” and continues to inspire those around her. Click here to view Janet Lyso’s video.

These stories shine a light on the people and caregivers who make long-term care settings across South Dakota vibrant places to live and work.

As SDAHO looks toward its own 100-year anniversary in 2026, 100 Years Young serves as a reflection of our state’s resilience, compassion, and community spirit.
