Two SD hospitals recognized among NRHA Top Rural and Community Hospitals

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) has announced the 20 highest-ranked prospective payment system (PPS) hospitals in the country based on an evaluation by the Chartis Center for Rural Health, and two South Dakota hospitals are among the list.

NRHA has named both Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton and Brookings Health System in Brookings to its list of the Top 20 Rural and Community Hospitals in the United States.

The recognition is based on data from the Chartis Center for Rural Health and its Rural Hospital Performance INDEX™, which evaluates hospitals across key areas including quality, patient outcomes, financial strength, and patient experience.

This national honor highlights the exceptional care being delivered in South Dakota communities and reinforces the vital role rural hospitals play in ensuring access to high-quality health care close to home. Both facilities will be recognized at NRHA’s Annual Rural Health Conference this May in San Diego.

The announcement underscores South Dakota’s continued leadership in rural health, with hospitals that not only meet but exceed national benchmarks for performance and patient care.
