Palliative care is often misunderstood—but it plays a critical role in improving quality of life for patients and families facing serious illness. At its core, palliative care is specialized medical care focused on relieving symptoms, reducing stress, and supporting overall well-being—at any age and at any stage of illness. It can be provided alongside curative treatment, offering an added layer of support when it’s needed most.
“Palliative care is no longer something that’s ‘nice’ to have—it’s a HAVE to have.” was shared by Arif Kamal, MD, MBA, MHS, FACP, FAAHPM, FASCO – Chief Patient Officer for the American Cancer Society, Oncologist, Palliative Care Physician, associate professor of Medicine and Population Health at Duke University School of Medicine.
This approach brings together a team of professionals—including physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and spiritual care providers—to address not just physical symptoms, but emotional and practical needs as well.

Palliative Care vs. Hospice Care: What’s the Difference?
One important takeaway: while all hospice care includes palliative care, not all palliative care is hospice. While palliative care and hospice care share similarities, such as a focus on symptom management and quality of life, there are distinct differences. Palliative care can begin at any stage of a serious illness and be provided alongside curative treatments. Hospice care, however, is for those with a terminal diagnosis and a life expectancy of six months or less, and it begins when curative treatments are no longer being provided.
Whether you’re a provider supporting patients, a caregiver seeking clarity, or someone navigating a diagnosis, the LifeCircle webpage serves as a one-stop hub for compassionate, practical information.
