South Dakota Workforce Resource Center – A trusted tool for health care professionals
Since 2023, the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) has made significant strides in addressing workforce challenges through the Rural Network Development Grant awarded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). One of the most impactful outcomes of this work is the updated South Dakota Workforce Resource Center (SDWRC), a trusted website through SDAHO that is a go-to tool designed to support members across the state.
Through this grant funded project, a network of health care organizations and community partners called South Dakota Rural Workforce Network (SDRWN) was created. This network includes critical access hospitals, nursing homes, a technology school, post-secondary university and a nonprofit social services organization across rural South Dakota, designed to create, grow and strengthen a workforce pipeline.
“Being part of this grant has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Hearing diverse perspectives and learning from others—both what has worked well and what hasn’t—has helped us grow and explore new approaches.” – Nicole Scheider, Business Office Manager, Mobridge Regional Hospital and Clinics
The SDWRC website serves as a one-stop shop for recruitment, retention, and career development resources—equipping organizations with practical tools to attract talent, build internal pathways, and enhance employee engagement.
“Participating in the South Dakota Rural Workforce Network has been a valuable experience for our organization. The collaboration, shared resources, and tools available through SDAHO—particularly the SD Workforce Resource Center—have meaningfully supported our recruiting and workforce planning efforts.”
– Lacey Ellsworth, MS, SHRM-CP, Brookings Health System
From customizable hiring resources to retention strategies and connections to state and national partners, the platform is tailored to meet the unique needs of rural health care. Members continue to rely on the SDWRC to strengthen their workforce strategies and drive long-term success.
“Through my involvement in the South Dakota Rural Workforce Network grant, I’ve seen firsthand how collaboration can drive meaningful workforce solutions for rural health care.”
– Brooke Sydow, EdD, Huron Regional Medical Center
In addition to recruitment support, the Resource Center highlights innovative approaches like apprenticeship programs and “earn while you learn” pathways—helping organizations grow talent from within while building stronger, more engaged teams.
“SDAHO’s leadership and support have been instrumental in turning these ideas into action—improving recruitment, retention, and building a stronger foundation for the future.”
– Brooke Sydow, EdD, Huron Regional Medical Center
“It has also been eye-opening to see what schools and agencies across the state have to offer. The breadth of resources available is truly impressive, and contributing to strengthening them has been meaningful. We are also beyond excited to begin our first apprenticeship.” – Nicole Scheider, Business Office Manager, Mobridge Regional Hospital and Clinics
As workforce challenges continue to evolve, SDAHO remains committed to providing meaningful, accessible solutions. The SD Workforce Resource Center stands as a powerful example of commitment helping members not only respond to today’s needs, but plan for tomorrow’s success.
