Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Future: 50, 75, and 100 Years of SDAHO

In 1976, the South Dakota Hospital Association marked its 50th Anniversary—a milestone that reflected five decades of steady growth, collaboration, and commitment to improving health care across the state. Since its founding in 1926, the Association had navigated significant challenges, from the economic hardships of the Great Depression to the increasing complexity of modern health care. By its golden anniversary, it had established itself as a trusted voice for hospitals, advancing policy, education, and shared solutions to strengthen care for all South Dakotans.

Twenty-five years later, the 75th Anniversary in 2001 offered an opportunity to reflect on an even broader legacy. As highlighted by longtime leader Bud Jones, the Association had evolved well beyond its original focus—expanding partnerships, supporting a wider continuum of care, and adapting to rapid advancements in medicine and technology. The 1995 transition to the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations marked a pivotal shift, embracing a more inclusive mission to represent not only hospitals, but long-term care, home health, and other essential health care services.

Now, in 2026, SDAHO proudly celebrates 100 years of service. This centennial milestone honors a century of leadership, innovation, and dedication to health care in South Dakota—while looking ahead to the opportunities and challenges of the future.
