Surgical & Anesthesia Services: Understanding CMS Requirements

Is your organization meeting the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements for surgical and anesthesia services?

Non-compliance with the Condition of Surgical Services has ranked among the top three Condition Level deficiencies cited in South Dakota hospitals and critical access hospitals over the past three years.

An upcoming session, led by Nancy Ruzicka, on Thursday, October 29, from 12:00-1:30 PM CST, will provide a practical overview of the regulatory requirements for surgical and anesthesia services, including required policies and procedures, staffing and practitioner credentialing, and documentation expectations. The session will also highlight common areas where hospitals and critical access hospitals may encounter compliance concerns.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Describe minimum required policies and procedures for surgical and anesthesia services
  • Understand staffing and practitioner credentialing requirements
  • Explain the differences in CMS requirements for history and physical examinations between hospitals and critical access hospitals
  • Identify commonly cited surgical services and anesthesia standards
