Leading Through AI – Education, Oversight and the Human Side of Healthcare
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing healthcare, creating new opportunities to improve efficiency, support clinical decisions and strengthen operations. But as AI becomes more common, healthcare leaders and governing boards face an important responsibility: understanding its benefits, recognizing its risks and ensuring patients remain at the center of every decision.
The Fall 2026 edition of SDAHO’s The Trustee Quarterly explores The Board’s Role in AI Use and Implementation, including practical considerations for healthcare organizations navigating this evolving technology.
Our Perspective: Education, Oversight and the Human Side of Healthcare
In SDAHO’s Our Perspective article, “Leading Through AI: Education, Oversight and the Human Side of Healthcare,” we emphasize the importance of ongoing education and informed leadership.
Throughout 2026, SDAHO has offered educational opportunities addressing AI in healthcare, from reducing administrative burdens and strengthening workforce strategies to understanding generative AI, cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
While healthcare leaders do not need to become technology experts, they must be prepared to ask the right questions. How will AI improve patient care or operations? What safeguards protect patient information? Who is responsible for oversight? And how can organizations ensure technology supports, rather than replaces, the human side of healthcare?
SDAHO’s message is clear: AI should be a tool that supports healthcare professionals, not a replacement for human judgment, compassion or patient-centered care.
The Fall edition also examines real-world AI applications, governance considerations and the role of community advisory councils in strengthening connections between healthcare organizations and the communities they serve.
