In a continuing effort to crack down on underage vaping, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) unexpectedly seized over 1,000 pages of documents from the headquarters of e-cigarette maker Juul Labs. Documents taken were related to Juul’s sales and marketing practices.
Juul is under scrutiny for making e-cigarette products in flavors that are particularly appealing to minors, such as mango and creme. A report released Oct. 2 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows Juul’s sales grew from 2.2 million e-cigarette devices in 2016 to 16.2 million in 2017, an increase of 641 percent. Just how many of those e-cigarettes are purchased by minors is unknown, however use among kids is on the rise.
In September FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb called teenage vaping an epidemic. He launched an enforcement action against retailers for allegedly selling e-cigarettes to minors and warned manufacturers of a potential ban on flavored e-cigarette liquids.
