SD Health Care Facilities are Economic Anchors in their Communities

In 2018 South Dakota hospitals and nursing homes treated 378,697 people in their emergency departments, provided 3,185,801 outpatient visits, performed over 64,169 surgeries, delivered 13,122 babies, and treated 7,400 nursing home residents. Every year, hospitals and nursing homes provide vital health care services like these to thousands of South Dakotans in their communities. However, the importance of hospitals and nursing homes to their communities extends far beyond health care. The health care sector has traditionally been an economic mainstay, providing stability and job growth in communities.

Hospitals and nursing homes:

  • Employ 30,502 people.
  • Are one of the top sources of private-sector jobs.
  • Purchase $5.3 billion in goods and services from other businesses.

The goods and services hospitals purchase from other businesses create additional economic value for the community. With these ā€œripple effectsā€ included, hospitals and nursing homes support almost $9 billion in economic activity annually.
