Healthcare Hero Highlight: Lisa Parsons

Every once in a while a person is lucky enough to find their passion and purpose right from the get-go. That was the case for Lisa Parsons, RN at Monument Health Assisted Living (MHAL)

Starting as an LPN and working to earn her RN, Lisa has been in healthcare for over 36 years. When asked what inspired her to pursue this career, she said, “I can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. I have always felt a compassion for others in wanting to help when there is a need.”

As Brookings, SD, native, Lisa is especially passionate about working in her home state. “It feels very fulfilling serving South Dakota. I’m very proud to be from here.” She’s also proud of the network of healthcare systems the state has built. “I appreciate the camaraderie and familiarity of those I work with here in rural SD. Everyone is looking out for their neighbor and working together for best outcomes.”

On an ordinary day, Lisa’s favorite part of her job is “forming relationships with those I work with and for.” But when Covid-19 struck, that shared connection with her patients was even more important. “When the families are not able to be as involved, I find within myself a desire to step in to help. So, I see myself as extended family to my residents. I love my patients and want to help them feel as loved and cared for as possible.”

Colleague Brandon One Feather added that “throughout the public health emergency, MHAL developed strategies to maintain stringent infection control practices to keep residents safe and healthy.” But Lisa repeatedly went “above and beyond the call of duty to maintain a positive emotional culture within MHAL. Lisa is a shining example of a healthcare hero.”
