Overview

Learn about common behaviors in geriatric patients and discover the potential triggers that create these behaviors.  This session will present non-pharmaceutical interventions for behaviors and enable all staff in maintaining the safety, health, and stability of the geriatric patients.  The interventions presented in this education can be used by any person working with, alongside, or caring for our elderly patients who struggle with behavioral regulation.

Presenter

Valerie Arens grew up on a farm south of Beresford with three siblings, and graduated Beresford High School in 2000. She attended USD and graduated with an Associates in Nursing in 2012. Valerie has worked in geriatrics for over twenty years in almost every capacity, and has a knack for end of life and dementia care. Valerie currently works for Avera Health Plans as a Case Manager. Previously, Valerie worked at Sunset Manor in Irene as the Education and Infection Control Nurse. While working at Sunset Manor, Valerie learned a lot in the specialized behavioral unit and TBI unit. She enjoyed working closely with new and potential CNAs and med-aides, doing monthly inservices for all staff, and being a part of QAPI. Valerie resides in Lennox, SD with two teenage children, her partner of 18 years Bear, and the absolute light of her life- a two year old Cocker Spaniel named Betty.

Registration for this webinar is per connection needed at a facility. This allows multiple staff members to participate in the education using one connection. Prior registration is required to ensure connection information and applicable materials are distributed prior to the webinar. The registration fee for this webinar is $49 per SDAHO Member facility /$99 per non-member facility.
