2022 South Dakota Legislative Update: Week 2

The 2022 South Dakota Legislative session has completed week 2, with several bills focusing on medical marijuana so far. This week members of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee took public testimony on most of the bills that came out of the Marijuana Summer Study Committee.

As healthcare communities continue to struggle with workforce challenges, lawmakers took up one measure that could help with recruitment needs in the future. Senate Bill 43 will authorize the renovation and creation of an addition for a health sciences center at Black Hills State University–Rapid City. This collaborative program will combine the efforts of Black Hills State University and South Dakota State University moving the number of nursing students from 72 to 120. Governor Noem is recommending spending $8 million dollars from American Rescue Plan funds on the project. To see a short excerpt from Senate Bill 43, click here.
