Biden’s Nursing Home Vision to Increase Oversight and Penalties

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will be hosting a National Nursing Home Stakeholder Call on March 10 at 2pm CT/3pm ET to outline the details of President Biden’s efforts to set minimum staffing requirements, increase oversight, and make ownership more transparent. Biden is calling on congress to provide almost $500 million to CMS to support health and safety inspections at nursing homes and is raising the dollar limit on per-instance financial penalties levied on poor-performing facilities from $21,000 to $1,000,000. In the past two years, the nursing home industry, regulated by CMS and surveyed by the state Department of Health, has had to endure layers of additional regulations, surveys and fines while caring for our most vulnerable population. More than ever, the long term care industry is in need of funding, workforce solutions, regulatory reform and infrastructure investment, not punishment. A recording of the stakeholder call will be available on the CMS website.
