Careers in Aging Week April 17 – 23, 2022

This week is Careers in Aging Week. It is a week to celebrate and promote professions in the field of long-term care. The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) hosts Careers in Aging week every year to raise awareness about the diverse careers available in the field of aging.

People are living longer and populations are aging worldwide. The demand for professionals with expertise in aging is growing rapidly. Careers in Aging Week (CIAW) is observed every year by businesses, clinics, coalitions, organizations, universities, colleges, and other parties across the world. The goal of CIAW is to bring greater awareness and visibility to the wide-ranging career opportunities in the field of aging.

In South Dakota, and nationally, employers in the long-term care industry are competing for qualified applicants. Statistics show a 55-75% average turnover rate in nursing homes and 42% of facilities are limiting admissions due to staffing challenges where Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) account for about two-thirds of the direct care workforce. Caregivers in Aging Services are compassionate heroes who make a difference in the lives of others every single day. It is more than a career, it is a calling.
