Section 1557 is the nondiscrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in health programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. Section 1557 makes it unlawful for any health care provider that receives funding from the Federal government to refuse to treat an individual – or to otherwise discriminate against the individual – based on race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.
On Tuesday, October 25, SDAHO will host Lena Browning, subject matter expert in healthcare regulatory and accreditation with NASH Healthcare Consulting, as she addresses Office of Civil Rights (OCR) section 1557 and the topic of nondiscrimination. In addition, Lena will discuss recent changes regarding gender identify and the definition of sex discrimination. Other topics include required mandatory staff education, how to file a complaint if one encounters discrimination, and the involvement of interpreters.
