Essentials of the LTC Director of Nursing Role

SDAHO is pleased to announce a 2-part series that will aid in developing the Director of Nursing (DON) role in nursing homes. Elements of this series will focus on budgeting and quality assurance; survey processes and regulations; and human resources, customer service, and leadership.

The first session is Essentials for the LTC Director of Nursing Role and this will take place on January 18, 2023 from 12:15 – 4:15 p.m. CT.

This session will include strategies for budgeting and capital expenses and an overview of Federal and State reimbursement and Performance Measures including Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM); Payroll Based Journal (PBJ); and Value Based Purchasing (VBP).

  • Define, explain, and understand the implications of PDPM.
  • Define, explain, and understand the implications of VBP.
  • Define, explain, and understand the implications of PBJ.
  • Review the DON’s role in budgeting and determining capital expenses for the nursing department.

Presenter: Geoffrey Ryan, LNHA, began his career as an Administrative Assistant in 1994 and was promoted to Nursing Home Administrator in 2005. He started with St. Francis Health Services in 1998 serving as the Administrator for nursing homes within the organization.  Geoff currently serves as the Regional Director for St. Francis Health Services providing mentoring to the Administrators serving in the Northern portion of Minnesota. Geoff’s areas of expertise include budgeting, finance, union negotiations, and life safety code.

Presenter: Cami Peterson-DeVries, AGNP, DHA, MSN, LNHA, began her career as a nursing assistant, advancing her education in nursing and administration. Cami has served in various positions in the long-term care field including a Director of Nursing, Nursing Home Administrator, Regional Director and most recently as the Vice President of Senior Services for St. Francis Health Services in Morris, Minnesota. In her role as VP of Senior Services, Cami provides support and education to long-term care centers that is necessary for organizational success.

The second session is Quality Improvement for the LTC Leader, and this will take place on January 19, 2023, from 1 – 4 p.m. CT.

Successful long-term care leaders need a good understanding of how the publicly reported Five-Star quality measures impacts operations and using this data to identify opportunities for improvement. During this session you will learn more on what the data reveals about your organization, turning this information to identify priority needs for improvement, and “the how” to leading teams on the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) journey.

  • Identify how quality measures impact nursing home operations.
  • Develop strategies for quality assurance monitors to improve quality measure performance.
  • Prioritize quality measures for performance improvement based on nursing home impact.

Presenter: Gina Anderson RN, BSN is a Senior Quality Improvement Facilitator at Telligen. She has worked in and supported nursing homes in a variety of roles for more than 25 years including an MDS coordinator, Director of Nursing, and nurse consultant. In her current role, she supports nursing homes across the Telligen region with quality improvement enhanced assistance, education, and resources. Gina has a strong compassion for building relationships with providers to improve the lives of residents living in health care facilities.
