Two South Dakota Healthcare Agencies set to Receive Millions in Federal Grant Funding to Address Nursing Shortage

A report released by The Dakota Scout says, Sanford Health and the University of South Dakota nursing department are among 25 healthcare agencies in the country that will receive a portion of $78 million in grants aimed at standing up innovative workforce training programs to assist with the state’s nursing workforce shortage.

According to The Dakota Scout report, which was published on May 18, 2023, South Dakota will receive nearly $6 million through the Labor Department grants, split between Sanford Health and USD. The report also states that Sanford intends to bolster an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing second degree program in cooperation with North Dakota State University. USD will take a similar approach, using the funds to foster more relationships with partners across the healthcare industry to develop enhanced workforce and education strategies. The funds will also allow the Vermillion-based college to increase scholarships and support services for 128 new nurses in baccalaureate and master’s programs.
