SDAHO Celebrates National Doctors Day March 30

Whether in hospitals, clinics, or other settings, doctors work tirelessly to provide care in their communities and save lives. That is why every year we set aside March 30 to recognize and celebrate all our hard-working doctors.

National Doctors Day in the United States is a holiday that honors physicians for the work they do for their patients, the communities they work in, and for society. It is their hard work and devotion that keeps all of us healthy and this day thanks them for doing that for us and our loves ones.

This holiday, initiated in 1933 by Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a prominent Georgian doctor, was established to recognize and honor doctors for their service. Eudora and her community mailed greeting cards to area doctors and to placed red carnations on the graves of deceased doctors. Red carnations are still used to this day for National Doctors Day celebrations. Eudora choose March 30 to commemorate the day in 1842 when Dr. Crawford W. Long used an ether anesthetic for the first time. Doctors Day was an unofficial holiday until Congress passed Proclamation 6253 in 1991.

Physicians play a pivotal role in safeguarding and improving the well-being of patients. Their extensive education, training and expertise are essential in diagnosing and treating a vast array of medical conditions. Beyond their clinical roles, doctors contribute significantly to medical research, innovation and the continuous improvement of health care practices.

This day offers an opportunity for health care institutions and patients to express their gratitude and appreciation for the tireless efforts of physicians.

On behalf of SDAHO, thank you to all of our doctors making a difference in the lives of your patients and communities.
