ASPR highlights strategies to mitigate workplace violence in health care settings

The Healthcare and Public Health (HPH) Sector Advisory Bulletin, produced by the within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), highlights key updates and recommendations for healthcare organizations.

Targeted Violence in Healthcare Facilities

Violence in healthcare settings is a growing concern, with nearly 75% of workplace assaults occurring in these environments. To address this, healthcare organizations must take proactive steps to protect staff and patients. This includes planning, training, and ensuring effective security measures.

Key Recommendations:

  1. Strengthen Security
    • Collaborate with local law enforcement and implement multidisciplinary threat assessment teams.
    • Equip staff with panic buttons and reporting apps.
    • Improve visibility in both internal and external areas.
  2. Enhance Emergency Preparedness
    • Update emergency plans, conduct drills, and train staff in de-escalation and self-defense.
    • Ensure critical life-saving equipment is available and easily accessible.
  3. Support Mental Health and Retention
    • Provide counseling services for affected staff.
    • Foster a culture that encourages reporting suspicious behavior.
  4. Promote Information Sharing
    • Monitor official sources like the FBI, DHS, and HHS for updates on threats.
    • Share validated threat information with healthcare coalitions and law enforcement.
