Overview:

In this presentation we will explore the literature around how to assess for intimacy concerns within a palliative care population and discuss ways to become comfortable integrating an assessment into your clinical practice.

Objectives:
  • Describe the existing evidence base on intimacy and sexual symptom assessment and treatment in the palliative care population.
  • Identify medical, psychological, and social issues leading to intimacy and sexual symptom concerns in patients with serious illness.
  • Explore clinical barriers to this conversation.
Presenter: Anne Kelemen, LICSW, SEP

Anne Kelemen, LICSW, SEP has spent over 15 years working in hospice and palliative care. She worked as the Social Work Supervisor for the Section of Palliative Care at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC for a decade where she conducted patient care, taught, and participated in a variety of research activities. She now operates a private practice in Washington, DC where she specializes in working with people who have an acute, chronic, or serious illness. Her practice also focuses on healthcare professionals and caregivers. In addition to her direct practice work, Anne is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center.
