The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be removing social security numbers from all Medicare cards to lessen seniors’ vulnerability to identity theft and better protect private information.

The change comes per the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA).

CMS will soon be reaching out to Medicare beneficiaries with information on the new cards, and beneficiaries will receive new Medicare cards with a new number by April 2019.
