President Trump’s nominee to head the Indian Health Service, Robert Weaver, has withdrawn his name for consideration. Weaver became embroiled in a controversy over the accuracy of his credentials after he submitted materials to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
The administration is being urged by the leadership of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee (which has oversight) to work with Native American tribes and leaders to vet names for a new nominee.
The Indian Health Service, which is part of the Department of Health & Human Services and has responsibility for the health care for 2 million Native Americans, has not had a permanent head since 2015.
