Putting the Spotlight on Elder Abuse: Free Elder Abuse Training

The South Dakota Department of Human Services Adult Protective Service and Long-Term Care Ombudsman programs are offering a free Elder Abuse Training on April 12, 2022, in Fort Pierre, from 9am CST to 4pm CST.

The featured presenter is Paul Greenwood, retired Deputy District Attorney with the San Diego District Attorney’s Office. Greenwood served as a Prosecutor from March 1993 to March of 2018, where he was involved in the prosecution of over 700 felony cases of elder and dependent adult abuse cases. With Over 40 years of experience, Greenwood is bringing that knowledge to South Dakota focusing on police, social workers and other agencies that work directly with older adults.

The Training will include but is not limited to:

Types of Abuse:

  • Physical Abuse
  • Mental & emotional abuse
  • Neglect
  • False imprisonment
  • Financial exploitation
  • Sexual abuse

There are common mistakes or misconceptions that sometimes prevent or hinder successful investigations of elder and dependent adult abuse referrals such as:

  • Victim will make an ineffective witness
  • Victim declines to press charges
  • Crime did not occur in our jurisdiction
  • This is a civil matter
  • Victim handed money over voluntarily, no crime exists
  • And more…

This free training has limited capacity, up to 150 participants, so please register right away. Those attending will also receive a certificate of attendance.
