Pioneer Memorial Hospital and Health Services Krista Schaeffer, RN Talks Life and the Perks of Living and Working in a Rural Community

To help member facilities with workforce needs, SDAHO has launched the Hometown Healthcare Heroes campaign. The campaign is designed to recognize and celebrate member facilities, the people that work there and the communities they live in, while recognizing and promoting job opportunities within member facilities. This week Krista Schaeffer, RN and Long-Term Care MDS Coordinator with the Nursing home at Pioneer Memorial Hospital and Health Services shares her thoughts on living and working in Viborg, South Dakota.

Krista is originally from a small town in Minnesota but attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, where she earned her Bachelor of Nursing Degree and also met her husband, who is originally from Viborg, South Dakota. “Low and behold, I met a farmer from Viborg and here I am still in Viborg.” Krista says that being a rural facility that includes a hospital, a clinic, assisted living, nursing home and independent senior living facility all in one building is a wonderful asset for the members of Viborg. “It’s awesome because the providers get to know the patients so well and so do the nurses. We get to take them to our own clinic and the continuity of care is so much better because we are under one roof”

In addition to a quality healthcare system available to community members provided by a dedicated team, Krista says there are a lot of amenities and hidden gems in Viborg. “There are a lot of small businesses and just knowing your co-workers well and knowing the people that are coming into your facility. They are people that are my neighbors and friends, it’s just great joy to care for them.”

Viborg offers families an elementary, middle, and high school. Houses and hospitals to rent with a new housing development offering families new construction homes. Viborg is located in Turner County, which is just a short drive from Sioux Falls, which is South Dakota’s largest community.
