Quality Corner: New DEA Requirements and Buprenorphine Education

ATTENTION PROVIDERS: Did you know there is a non-opioid medication that treats pain up to 30x better than morphine?

SDAHO will be hosting a 30-minute learning session on August 22 at 12:30pm (CST) and again on August 29 at 12:30pm (CST). These sessions will contain the same information, please register for the one that works best with your schedule.

Dr. Jennifer Ball, PharmD, BCACP, BCGP

We highly encourage providers, along with any other interested staff, to listen in as Dr. Jennifer Ball, PharmD, BCACP, BCGP, Clinical Pharmacist with the Center for Family Medicine, will speak on how buprenorphine is very beneficial for pain control, in addition to being used as a treatment for opioid withdrawal. Participation will allow physicians the opportunity to learn how a non-opioid medication can be used for chronic or acute pain.  During this webinar, Dr. Ball will also discuss the new, one-time requirement for DEA registration for both new and renewing staff, that began on June 27, 2023. Providers will need to affirm they have completed eight hours of training. There will also be time for questions during the session.

Substance Use Disorders including opioid use and alcohol abuse have risen significantly since the start of Covid-19. Hospitals and clinics are seeing a need to find new ways to screen and treat these patients. SDAHO is currently working on a grant with the South Dakota Department of Health that allows our consultants to visit facilities and educate on this topic. This service provides new information to facilities through our professional registered nurses who are knowledgeable on the subject. You do not want to miss out on this opportunity. Please contact one of our Clinical Improvement Consultants, Michelle Hofer at michelle.hofer@sdaho.org and Loretta Bryan at loretta.bryan@sdaho.org for more information.
