One of the hallmarks of great hospice and/or palliative care is the interdisciplinary team which focuses on whole person care. What are the person’s values and preferences? What are they most worried about? Often, team members hear that patients are worried about their family and what will happen to them when they die? “Family” is not only two legged members but also four legged members.
One way hospice or palliative care teams can help patients work through this question is by contacting the Pet Endowment Trust (PET) – PetEndowment.org and create a plan for the care of your pet. This gives pet owners a say in where their pets get re-homed. PET is a 501c3 national non-profit animal welfare organization.
PET is also looking for collaboration opportunities with hospice providers. They want to give hospice providers pet planning tools and resources that can help their practices as well as bringing collaborative action to their community.
