Stepping into Governance will offer members four individual videos (25-minutes each) in early 2024 with more scheduled later in the year. Videos topics:
- Introducing Governance Design
- Partnerships and Alliances
- The Business of Healthcare
- Moving Mission Forward
The video series provides board members with an introduction to their governance role, or they can be used as a refresher for veteran board members.
Introducing Governance Design defines the various governance models healthcare organization’s work within. Fiduciary duties demanded of board members as they provide their leadership to their organization are important and focused on throughout video one of this four-part series. Members will also be given tools to help them better engage with their community through philanthropy, which can fulfill the healthcare mission, keeping a health system vibrant and connected.
Partnerships and Alliances provides an overview of the many relationships that contribute to effectively running a healthcare organization. Outlined are the relationships, partnerships, understanding, and communication demanded of board members as they provide their leadership to their organizations. Board members have a fiduciary duty to understand types of affiliations and partnerships now common in healthcare across regions. Board members are the voice of their community and each member’s voice has power. A board member’s role has great responsibility that must be carefully protected and viewers of video #2 will get an overview of all the above.
The Business of Healthcare provides an overview on setting strategic direction and acting as the leading voice of the community. Viewers will better understand that when done well, boards of directors can feel confident that their community neighbors, family, and friends are being served with the highest quality and accessibility to meet their emergency and routine medical needs. Video #3 helps viewers understand “boundaries and business” of a board member and remembering both can make a real difference for the community.
Moving Mission Forward provides an overview of the strategic work of the board in collaboration with its executive leadership. The video outlines three areas; board composition, renewal, and role as ambassador in the community. Self-management by the board allows for it to act responsibly in the community and assure healthcare will continue to be delivered with the community in mind. When done well, boards of directors can feel confident that their community neighbors, family, and friends are being served with a system uniquely designed to meet their needs. Viewers will leave understanding how good governance acts as a core element of stability in healthcare access and sustainability for the long term.
Stepping into Governance is a free video resource for SDAHO members to share as a tool with board members working on behalf of boards within your own health system.
