There are many types of Governance Boards, which require a different set of rules and responsibilities. It’s important to understand which type of board you are affiliated with and how your organization can connect with the community and healthcare system. There are complexities with certain types of boards.

Understanding the philanthropic arm and how philanthropy plays a role in the community is a key component to a board member’s fiduciary duty. It is common for a healthcare organization to have a philanthropy arm that concentrates on engaging the community. There could be a foundation, partially separate from the governance of your organization that oversees this area. There may also bean advisory board or committee or other structure that guides the work and promotion of philanthropy, but it’s critical that this relationship be understood, and clear guidelines are written to guide and direct that relationship.
