Quality Corner: Managing Opioid Use Disorders in Patients with Chronic Pain

Dr. Craig Uthe

On August 1, 2024, Dr. Craig Uthe presented a webinar session for SDAHO on Care & Management of the Patient with Chronic Pain & Opioid Dependence. Dr. Uthe described the challenges that exist in providing safe care to a patient with co-occurring chronic pain and opioid dependence. He explained how to make an accurate diagnosis of their medical condition and how to develop an appropriate treatment plan in response. He provided insight on risks versus benefits of chronic opioid use. The session included helpful graphics on treating pain at the source and long-term use of opioid may cause side effects. The next steps in treating a patient with chronic pain and opioid dependence could include the use of Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (MOUD). SDAHO has collaborated with the Opioid Response Network and can offer individual sessions to facilities to learn more about how to prescribe MOUD. These sessions are 1-2 hours long and led by a subject matter expert, such as Dr. Uthe. The sessions provide direct education on how to prescribe MOUD and allow providers to ask specific questions. These individual sessions will meet the requirements for the 8 hours of DEA licensure; the approval is via AAAP/ORN through the ACCME.

If your facility is interested in learning more about how to prescribe medications for opioid use disorders and would like to have an individualize session with a subject matter expert, please contact Loretta Bryan or Michelle Jury to coordinate this training.

SDAHO is also excited to announce that Kendra Joswiak, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, CARN-AP will be presenting on September 26, 2024, during our Annual Convention in Rapid City, SD. Kendra is the Clinical Practice Director at Project Recovery. Her session is titled Addiction: Through the Lens of Chronic Disease. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about substance use disorders and medications that can be used to help treat this chronic disease.
