A new EY analysis prepared for the American Hospital Association (AHA) highlights the significant value nonprofit hospitals and health systems provide to the communities they serve. According to the report, tax-exempt hospitals delivered $11 in benefits for every dollar of federal tax exemption in 2022, the most recent year with comprehensive data available.
The findings show that nonprofit hospitals forwent an estimated $13.2 billion in federal tax revenue, while providing an impressive $149 billion in community benefits. This represents an increase from prior analyses, which found that hospitals historically delivered benefits at a ratio of about 10 to 1.
“These numbers tell a powerful story about the role hospitals play beyond their walls,” said AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack. “Hospitals are the heartbeat of healthier communities. This EY report shows they’re not only saving lives 24/7 — they’re also pioneering programs that inspire hope and create a stronger, healthier future for all.”
The report underscores the ongoing commitment of nonprofit hospitals to improving access, addressing community needs, and supporting the overall well-being of patients and families across the nation.
