“It is not only a blessing to give someone an organ, kidney, tissue, whatever it is, it’s an honor to know that because of Giovanni, and because of others, people can live,” shared the mother of a donor.

Honoring the Gift: A New Way to Remember
Many hospitals offer an honor walk to the families of organ donors. During this sacred moment, hospital staff line the hallways in silence or with meaningful music, as the donor is escorted from the Intensive Care Unit to the operating room. Families walk beside their loved one, witnessing a final act of extraordinary generosity.
These moments are powerful. Many families choose to preserve them.

A Legacy of Love: Ramona’s Story
When Ramona Straight lost her young grandson in a tragic motor vehicle accident in 2021, her world changed forever. Yet through unimaginable loss, her grandson’s gift of organ donation brought life to three others and with it, a path toward healing and purpose.
Today, Ramona carries his legacy forward with strength and grace. She finds comfort in knowing the lives he saved and the impact he continues to make.
“Ramona is a force,” said LifeSource Donation Liaison Lily Mason. “She’s driven by pure love, family, and perseverance. To endure what she has and still carry so much compassion for others is incredibly rare. I am constantly inspired by her.”
As a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Ramona honors a cherished tradition of remembering loved ones for five years after their passing. She has embraced this tradition by celebrating her grandson’s legacy in meaningful ways organizing a “Hero’s Honor Walk” on the reservation, raising awareness about organ donation, and even hosting community meals in his honor.
Her story is one of resilience, generosity and hope.
“Through the gift of life to others I know my grandson is still here with me not only spiritually but physically as well,” said Ramona. “I feel a little comfort knowing his heart is still beating and thriving thru another that is the legacy he left; I feel compelled to honor that and him.”
Native Americans face a disproportionate need for life-saving transplants, yet donation rates remain lower. Ramona is helping to change that—serving as a powerful voice and example within her community, inspiring others to learn, consider and say “yes” to donation.
