A Legacy of Recognition: The History of SDAHO’s Distinguished Service Awards

July 1 – Nomination Deadline, only weeks away!

As the calendar turns to summer, one important date is quickly approaching July 1, 2026. That is the deadline to submit nominations for SDAHO’s Distinguished Service Awards (DSA), and it is the perfect time to reflect on the long-standing tradition of recognizing the people who make health care in South Dakota exceptional.

A Tradition of Recognition

SDAHO has made it a priority to celebrate health care excellence for decades, with the Distinguished Service Awards dating back to 1957. What began as a modest effort to recognize hospital leaders and administrators has grown into a meaningful tradition that honors individuals across the entire health care spectrum.

At its core, the DSA program was created to recognize those who go above and beyond—individuals whose dedication improves patient care, strengthens communities, and advances the mission of health care in South Dakota. Nominations come from peers, making each award a powerful acknowledgment from colleagues who see that impact firsthand.

Growing with Health Care

As health care has evolved, so too have the awards. The first DSA’s were small only one or two hospital administrators.  By the 1980s, recognition expanded to include association leaders and partners. In 1998, the program grew to honor community champions such as legislators and media professionals who help shape public understanding of health care.

Over time, additional categories were introduced to reflect the many roles that contribute to a strong health system. Today, the Distinguished Service Awards recognize excellence in areas including:

  • Trustee Award
  • Healthcare Journalist Award
  • State Legislator Award
  • State Official Award.
  • Healthcare Professional Award
  • Healthcare Hero Award
  • Young Professional Award
  • Post-Acute Care Champion Award
  • Quality Champion Award

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

Since 1966, SDAHO has documented award recipients, creating a rich history of excellence across the state. Recent honorees—from healthcare professionals and young leaders to quality champions and healthcare heroes—represent the continued strength and innovation of South Dakota’s health care community.
