100 Years of Gathering: A look back at SDAHO Annual Convention locations

As SDAHO celebrates its 100th Anniversary in 2026, we’re taking a look back at one of our longest-standing traditions—the Annual Convention.

For a century, healthcare leaders from across South Dakota have gathered to learn, collaborate, celebrate achievements, and shape the future of healthcare. While much has changed over the past 100 years, one thing has remained constant: the importance of coming together.

Since the first convention was held in Huron in 1926, the event has traveled across the state, visiting communities large and small and reflecting the growth of both SDAHO and South Dakota healthcare.

By the Numbers

  • 9 South Dakota communities have hosted an SDAHO Annual Convention.
  • Sioux Falls has hosted the most conventions, with approximately 40 gatherings over the past century.
  • Rapid City ranks second, hosting approximately 20 conventions.
  • Huron welcomed attendees 10 times, making it one of the association’s earliest and most frequent hosts.
  • Aberdeen hosted eight conventions, while Pierre and Mitchell each welcomed attendees five times.
  • Madison hosted the convention once, in 1931.
  • Yankton hosted twice, in 1948 and 1959.
  • Watertown hosted three times, in 1929, 1947, and 1966.

A Few Interesting Historical Notes

The convention’s earliest years saw the event move frequently among communities throughout the state. Between 1926 and 1950 alone, conventions were held in Huron, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Aberdeen, Madison, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City, and Yankton.

There was also one year when the convention did not take place. In 1945, no annual convention was held during World War II. More recently, the 2020 convention was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and replaced with virtual educational offerings.

Looking Ahead

This September, SDAHO’s 100th Annual Convention will continue the tradition as healthcare leaders gather once again in Sioux Falls. While the venues, cities, and meeting formats have evolved over the decades, the purpose remains unchanged: bringing together healthcare professionals dedicated to improving the health of South Dakotans.

As we celebrate a century of service, leadership, and collaboration, we’re grateful for every community that has welcomed SDAHO members through the years—and excited to create the next chapter of convention history together.
