1952–2001: Fifty Years of Change
Last month, from The SDAHO Vault we looked back at the first 25 years of the South Dakota Hospital Association, from its beginnings in 1926 through 1951. This month, we’re opening the vault again and moving ahead 50 years — from 1952 to 2001.
And what a half-century it was.
In 1952, the South Dakota Hospital Association became affiliated with the American Hospital Association. Just a few years later, in 1956, the Association was formally incorporated under South Dakota law. By 1958, it had established a central office in Pierre — a significant change from the early years when the Association’s headquarters essentially moved with its elected leadership.
Conventions Reflect the Times
The Annual Convention continued to be an important gathering place for South Dakota’s health care community, and looking through old convention programs offers a glimpse into the issues facing health care leaders at the time.
In 1976, SDHA celebrated its 50th anniversary during the Annual Convention in downtown Sioux Falls. Hospital leaders were joined by groups including the South Dakota Association of Hospital Auxiliaries and hospital personnel directors — an early reflection of the growing number of health care professionals gathering around the Association.
By the early 1980s, change was clearly on the minds of health care leaders. The theme of the 1981 convention was “Managing Change in an Era of Limitations: A Delicate Balance.” A year later, a Rubik’s Cube helped illustrate another fitting theme: “Hospitals: The Future Challenge.”
Some changes were happening right inside the convention meeting rooms. By the 1986 convention, SDHA announced that educational meeting rooms would be smoke-free, noting requests from members and a similar trend taking place in hospitals across the state.
A Broader Health Care Community
The Association itself continued to evolve.
In 1986, SDHA built a permanent home in Sioux Falls. During these years, the number of professional groups connected with the Association also continued to grow, bringing together administrators, nurses, finance professionals, public relations professionals, long-term care leaders and many others.
Then came one of the most visible changes in the Association’s history.
In September 1995, the South Dakota Hospital Association became the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO), adopting a broader vision and mission to represent and promote the continuum of care in South Dakota.
The change could already be seen on the cover of the 1996 Annual Convention program, which proudly displayed the SDAHO name while noting underneath: “Formerly South Dakota Hospital Association.”
Celebrating 75 Years
By 2001, SDAHO was ready to celebrate another milestone.
The 75th Annual Convention was held September 19–21 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center under the banner “Celebrating 75 Years of Service.” The convention materials featured historic health care photographs alongside the SDAHO logo — connecting the Association’s past with the health care community it had grown to represent.
The health care landscape had changed dramatically during those 50 years, and so had the Association. But one thing remained remarkably consistent: bringing health care professionals together to learn, share ideas, address challenges and strengthen health care in South Dakota.
As SDAHO celebrates 100 years in 2026, those old convention programs, photographs and documents offer more than a look back. They remind us that change has always been part of health care — and so has the value of facing it together.
Next month, From the SDAHO Vault moves into SDAHO’s most recent 25 years — 2002 to today — as we continue our journey through a century of serving South Dakota health care.
