DOH investigates Legionnaires’ disease in Sioux Falls

The South Dakota Department of Health issued a press release concerning 14 confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease that have been reported in people who live in or have traveled to Sioux Falls, resulting in one death.

DOH has requested assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC will assist with environmental assessments, case investigations and education.

Legionnaires’ disease is caused by Legionella bacteria. Typically the bacteria is inhaled in the fine spray from water sources such as decorative fountains, hot tubs or cooling towers. It is not spread person-to-person or by drinking water with the bacteria. Learn more about Legionnaires’ disease.
