State Medicaid Programs Required to Cover Medication Assisted Treatment Effective October 1, 2020

The SUPPORT Act of 2018 (P.L. 115-271) amended the Social Security Act to require state Medicaid programs to provide coverage for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services and drugs as a new mandatory benefit. CMS cites the purpose of the new mandatory benefit as increasing access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). CMS interprets the SUPPORT Act as requiring states to cover all forms of drugs and biologicals that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved or licensed for MAT to treat OUD.
