South Dakota Hospitals Recognized in Top 100 Critical Access & Rural Community Hospitals

Earlier this year, Chartis, a comprehensive healthcare advisory firm, unveiled the 2023 Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and the 2023 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals. This annual recognition program, which is based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX™ recognizes outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals. Michael Topchick, National Leader for the Chartis Center for Rural Health stated, “Across the nation, top 100 rural providers continue to serve as a source of inspiration for hospital leadership teams and staff working diligently every day to improve the delivery of care within their local communities. The list of award winners in each category is as geographically diverse as we’ve seen in some time, which is wonderful to see. We’re thrilled to be able to honor the outstanding efforts of these top performing rural hospitals.”

Of the top 100 Critical Access Hospitals recognized in 2023, those from South Dakota are:

  • Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller SD
  • Bowdle Hospital, Bowdle SD
  • Community Memorial Hospital Avera, Redfield SD
  • Faulkton Area Medical Center, Faulkton SD
  • Mobridge Regional Hospital, Mobridge SD
  • Sanford Vermillion Medical Center, Vermillion SD

Of the top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals recognized in 2023, those from South Dakota are:

  • Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell SD
  • Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton SD
  • Avera St Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen SD
  • Avera St Mary’s Hospital, Pierre SD
  • Brookings Health System, Brookings SD
  • Monument Health Spearfish Hospital, Spearfish SD
  • Prairie Lakes Healthcare System, Watertown SD
