Coalition Features Resources and Best Practices to Support Medicaid Redetermination

In February 2023, South Dakota began processing redeterminations, a function it historically has carried out every month prior to the COVID pandemic. If a recipient is found to no longer be eligible through the redetermination process, Medicaid coverage for recipients may be terminated beginning April 2023. South Dakota anticipates completing this process in 9-12 months.

Medicaid is an essential part of America’s health care system, and during the COVID-19 emergency, the program grew to cover 1 in 4 Americans – more than 90 million people. As America returns to normal operations following the COVID-19 crisis, states are beginning the process of redetermining whether each person is still eligible for the program, which could result in 18 million people losing access to Medicaid coverage.

Recently the Connecting to Coverage Coalition (CCC) was formed that includes a diverse group of leading organizations representing millions of American patients, people with disabilities, care providers, employer-related groups, and health insurance providers. The CCC is a national coalition committed to being a single source of trusted information about the Medicaid redetermination process. The CCC will also work to convene stakeholders to support information sharing, build on best practices, and develop solutions to ensure Americans are able to enroll in coverage that is right for themselves and their families. By working together, the CCC will support a smooth transition back to normal Medicaid eligibility during this unprecedented redetermination process, connect Americans to resources, and help them connect to coverage through other available health insurance, such as individual market or ACA marketplace coverage, employer-provided coverage, or separate coverage under the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
