The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) Healthcare Associated Infection/Antibiotic Resistance Program recently recognized two organizations for their efforts in Antibiotic Stewardship in South Dakota. Secretary Melissa Magstadt, Division Director Beth Dokken, and Program Director Lori Koenecke traveled to Philip on Thursday, December 21 to present the awards.
Philip Health Services was recognized for their dedication and progress in Antibiotic Stewardship over recent years. Through the commitment of providers and staff, they have implemented a community-wide program which includes their hospital, clinic, and long-term care areas. They have demonstrated that avoidance of unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotic use results in a decreased risk of resistant bacterial infections such as MRSA, C. difficile. and hospital acquired infections. This risk is decreased not only within their facility, but within their community as well. Philip Health Services is an example of how a rural hospital can lead the way for excellence in antibiotic stewardship.
The second recognition was presented to Keegan Mason & Associates. Dr. James Keegan and Randee Mason have been champions in statewide Antibiotic Stewardship efforts for many years. In particular, they have partnered with both the HAI/AR Program and the Office of Rural Health to provide expertise and guidance to the rural communities of South Dakota. Philip Health Services is one example of their success in partnering with Critical Access Hospitals to engage staff and providers in stewardship practices. They have been active members of the Antibiotic Stewardship Workgroup, within which they are always willing to share their expertise and vision.
